Regarding the origin of the name "Bandung", put forward various opinions. Some say that, the word "Bandung" in Sundanese, synonymous with the word "appeal" in the Indonesian language, means side by side. Ngabandeng (Sunda) means contiguous or adjacent. This is among others expressed in Big Indonesian Dictionary published by Balai Pustaka (1994) and Sundanese-Indonesian dictionary published by Pustaka Setia (1996), that the word "Bandung" means in pairs and also means that side by side.
Another opinion says that the word "bandung" means big or large. The word comes from the word milk. In Sundanese, ngabandeng is a term for a vast pool of water and seemed calm, but it seemed creepy. Allegedly milkfish said it then turned the sound into "Bandung". There is also an opinion stating that the word "Bandung"is derived from the word "weir". Opinions about the origin and meaning of the word "Bandung"is, apparently related to the events terbendungnya ancient Citarum River in the area Padalarang by Tangkuban Mt lava that erupted during the Holocene (± 6000 years ago). As a result, the area between Padalarang until Cicalengka (± 30 kilometers) and the area between Tangkuban Mt until Soreang (± 50 kilometers) under water into a large lake which became known as "Lake of Bandung"or "Ancient Lake of Bandung". Based on the study of geology, water "Lake of Bandung" is expected to begin receding in the Neolithic period (± 8000-7000 BC). The process of reflux of the lake took place gradually over the centuries.
Historically, the word or name "Bandung" began to be known since in former lake stood Bandung regency government (about the third decade of the 17th century). Thus, the term "Lake of Bandung" to the big lake that ensued after the founding of Bandung regency.
